The Best Over-the-Counter Remedies for Hangover Symptoms
July 08, 2022
You just woke up after a night out. Your head is pounding. Your body feels achy and shaky. You’re nauseous and might even have an upset stomach. Welcome to the hangover. While time is the ultimate best medicine, there are some over-the-counter medications that might help ease some of the symptoms. The good news? You likely have at least one of these on hand.
A friendly reminder that everyone handles alcohol differently and you should always talk to your doctor before trying a new medication or supplement.
Here are Some of the Best Over-the-Counter Remedies for Hangover Symptoms
1. NSAIDs (but avoid Tylenol)
Common non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) include ibuprofen, Motrin, Aspirin, and other brands. But, it’s important to avoid Tylenol as it includes acetaminophen, which can have a negative impact on your liver — which is already releasing toxins if you’re hungover. In general, NSAIDs can help ease inflammation in the body that can cause major hangover symptoms, but try to take it easy on the dose as mixing alcohol and ibuprofen can raise your risk of internal bleeding, specifically in the GI region. If you have digestive issues or are at higher risk of ulcers or bleeding, it’s best to avoid.
2. Dihydromyricetin
This ingredient is found in supplements and can be a game-changer for easing hangover symptoms. A study at the USC School of Pharmacy found that in addition to helping the liver better metabolize the effects of alcohol, it also reduced inflammation, promoted liver health, and “soothe pounding headaches.”
3. Prickly Pear Extract
In 2004, a placebo-controlled study found that those who had prickly pear extract prior to drinking had fewer hangover symptoms. Since then, many have said that this extract has been effective the following day, too, for easing nausea and lack of appetite.
4. Electrolyte-Filled Drink
If you’re battling the shakes or a terrible headache, opt for a Gatorade or Pedialyte to refuel your system, especially if you can’t keep food down. Electrolytes will help your body rehydrate, and the sodium, magnesium, and potassium work together to fight off fatigue, aches, and even headaches.
5. Antacids
Upset stomach or can't stop running to the bathroom? For many, that tends to be primary hangover symptoms. Antacids are a great remedy to ease some of that acidity in the stomach. Alka-Seltzer, Tums, Pepto Bismol are all some common over-the-counter options that can support tummy troubles.
